Lagna Calculator
Vedic ascendant by birth time

Find the sign rising on the eastern horizon at your exact moment of birth. Your Lagna forms the first house of your chart and shapes everything that follows.

Birth time required. The Lagna changes approximately every 2 hours. Unlike your Rashi or Nakshatra, the Lagna cannot be determined from date of birth alone — an accurate birth time (from a birth certificate or hospital record) is essential.

Why the Lagna matters

The Lagna is the cornerstone of the Vedic birth chart. Every house is counted from the Lagna — so getting it right changes the entire chart. The Lagna lord (the planet that rules your rising sign) and its house placement are among the first placements a Jyotishi examines. It governs health, physical appearance, the overall direction of life, and the lens through which you engage with the world.

The Lagna also determines which planets become functional benefics or malefics for your chart specifically. A planet that is generally considered auspicious in Vedic astrology may be challenging for your Lagna, and vice versa. This is why chart reading in Jyotish is always individualised — the Lagna makes every chart unique.

Common questions

What is Lagna in Vedic astrology?

Lagna is the ascendant — the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth. It forms the 1st house of your Vedic chart and is the single most structurally important placement. The Lagna lord's placement determines the overall quality and direction of your life.

Why does the Lagna change every 2 hours?

The Earth completes one full rotation every 24 hours, passing through all 12 zodiac signs. Each sign takes roughly 2 hours to rise. This is why two people born on the same day but in different hours can have entirely different charts — different Lagnas mean different house structures, different functional benefics and malefics, and different life themes.

What if I don't know my exact birth time?

Without a birth time, calculating the Lagna is not reliably possible. Try to obtain your birth certificate, hospital records, or ask a family member who may remember. Some astrologers use birth chart rectification — working backwards from life events — to estimate the Lagna, but this is an advanced technique and not always accurate.

What is the difference between Lagna and Rashi?

Lagna is your rising sign — determined by the exact time and location of birth. Rashi is your Moon sign — determined by the Moon's position, which can often be found from date alone. Both are central in Vedic astrology. The Lagna governs the outer life: body, personality, life direction. The Rashi governs the inner life: mind, emotions, instincts.
